Course Description

• INSTRUCTOR: Professor J. Labute -- BH 1112, Office Hours: MWF 9:30-10:30, 11:30-12:30,1:30-3:00.
• TEXT: N. Jacobson, Basic Algebra I (Second Edition), W.H. Freeman and Company.
• SYLLABUS: Commutative rings and fields, modules over a principal ideal domain, Galois theory of equations.
• ASSIGNMENTS: There will be bi-weekly assignments.
• TESTS: There will be two class tests.
• FINAL EXAM: There will be a three hour optional final exam; no calculators will be allowed.
• GRADING: If A = assignment mark, T1,T2 = test marks, E = exam mark and F = final mark (all out of 100), then F is the larger of .6E+.4A and .4A + .3T1 + .3T2.
