Course Description
- INSTRUCTOR: Professor J. Labute -- BH 1112, Office Hours: MWF
10:30-12:30.
- TEXT: D. Dummit and R. Foote, Abstract Algebra.
- REFERENCE: N. Jacobson, Basic Algebra I.
- SYLLABUS: Introduction to monoids, groups, permutation groups;
the isomorphism theorems for groups; the theorems of Cayley, Lagrange and
Sylow; the structure of groups of low order. Introduction to ring theory;
integral domains, fields, quotient field of an integral domain; polynomial
rings, unique factorization domains. Introduction to modules and algebras.
- ASSIGNMENTS: There will be bi-weekly assignments.
- MIDTERM TEST: There will be one class test which will be held
toward the end of October.
- FINAL EXAM: There will be a three hour final exam; no calculators
will be allowed.
- GRADING: If A = assignment mark, T = test mark, E = exam mark
and F = final mark (all out of 100), then F is the larger of E and .2A
+ .2T + .6E.
