Course Contents (chapters 1-5, 7 and 8 in the text book): (1) Review on partial derivatives and applications (3-4 lectures), (2) Method of separation of variables (4-5 lectures), (3) Fourier series and applications (4-5 lectures), (4) Vibrating string and membranes (4-5 lectures), (5) Strum-Liouville problems and special functions (5-7 lectures), (6) P.D.E's in higher dimensions (5-7 lectures), (7) Non-homogeneous P.D.E's (5-7 lectures), Assignments: There will be six assignments (due on following Wedesdays: Sept. 18, Oct. 2, 16, 30, Nov. 13, 27). ALL ASSIGNMENTS SHOULD BE HANDED IN BY 3:00pm (FIRM) ON DUE DAYS. THE DEPOSIT BOXE IS LOCATED THE OUTSIDE OF BSB-B157. Middle Term Tests: October 4 and November 5 during class time. Final Examination: to be scheduled in December. Marking System: Assignments, 20%; Middle-Term Test 40%; and Final Examination 40%. Ethics: Attention is drawn to the "Statement on Academic Dishonesty" received during registration and available in the Senate office. Any student who infringes any of these resolutions will be treated according to the published policy.
