DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS

MATH  242

  1. The text book for the course is  ‘Real Analysis’  Second Ed by Russell A. Gordon. Publishers Addison-Wesley Higher Mathematics.
  2. We will cover more or less all the material in the first four chapters of the book. However our coverage of the topics will not necessarily follow the same order as in the book.
  3. There will be about nine assignments. These assignments form an integral part of the course and should be taken very seriously.  Assignment marks carry an obligatory 15% of the evaluation of the course. The Department has allocated resources for the marking of assignments and I hope to have them marked and handed back on a regular schedule.
  4. Plagiarism and cheating:   While students are not discouraged from discussing problems or other material of the course with others or in groups, all the work that you submit must be your own. The following message is included to fulfill a resolution of Senate of the University in this regard.
    “McGill University values academic integrity. Therefore, all students must understand the meaning and consequences of cheating, plagiarism and other academic offences under the ‘Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures’. See www.mcgill.ca/integrity   for more details.
  5. The course has one hour (two different sessions of about identical value) of tutorial which is listed as ‘optional’. I very strongly encourage all of you to attend at least one of the tutorials every week. The tutorials will be given by two TAs [Ms. Qun Li and Mr Timoteo Rainone]. They are expected to provide some office hours on a regular basis. I will be announced at a later date.
  6. There will be two midterm tests of two hour duration each. The dates for the midterm are tentatively set for October 19, 2005  and November 16, 2005 and they will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The two tests together will account for 25% of the evaluation of the course.
  7. There will be a written final examination (dates will be announced by the Faculty) of three hour duration during the final examination period.
  8. The course will be evaluated using the following formula.
    15% for Assignments + Max. { 85% FE,   [60% FE + 25% MT] }
    (Here FE is the marks out of 100 for the final examination and MT is marks out of 100 for the two midterms together).
  9. For those who unfortunately fail the course, there is no additional work option available. There will be a supplemental examination given at the appropriate supplemental examination period and such an examination will be counted for 100 per cent to evaluate the course.
  10. My office hours are Mondays after the class until 11:30 and Thursdays 9:30 till 11 or by appointment.
