Required Text: Joseph Rotman, A first course in Abstract Algebra,
Prentice Hall publisher.
Note: Because of the unexpectedly high enrolment in the course, the
bookstore has run out of textbooks. They are on order, and should be available
in one or two weeks. In the meantime, you can purchase
a photocopy of chapter 1 of the book in the Basement of the
McConnell Engineering Building EUS copy room, for about 1.50$.
Syllabus: This course will cover the standard
syllabus for a
first year undergraduate course in abstract algebra.
The content and pace will be challenging:
emphasis will be placed on rigorous proofs, and on developping
mathematical
maturity and problem-solving skills.
Grading Scheme : 30%
Weekly assignments ,
30% Midterm, 40% Final.
There will be an option of 100% final.
