Kepler's Laws
Questions about Kepler's life and work
- State Kepler's three laws of planetary motion.
- Describe five (at least) other contributions to mathematics and/or
physics made by Kepler in his lifetime.
- When and where was Kepler born? What university did he attend, and
roughly when did he attend it?
- Part of Kepler's early work was in support of Copernicus' ideas
- what was significant about those ideas, and how did they differ from
the previous view of the cosmos?
- In his early description of his cosmology, Kepler used several
geometric solids (3D shapes) in a manner that seems very odd to modern
readers; what were these solids, and what role did they play in his
theory?
- In arriving at his three laws, Kepler used a large body of
astronomical data: who collected that data?
- Name the books Kepler wrote (English titles will suffice) in which
his three laws first appeared (indicate which laws appeared in which
books, and give publication dates).
- When and where did Kepler die?
Two of these questions will be chosen to appear on Test 2 (scheduled
for 30 March 2011).
And don't forget ...
Answer questions 1 to 3 of the
Applied
Project on Kepler's Laws.
