Abstract:
A first interesting question on the large-scale geometry of a metric space is whether it has finite or infinite diameter. We answer this question for the hydrodynamic L^2 (or more generally L^p) metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere, showing that the diameter is infinite. This solves the last open instance of such an unboundedness question for closed surfaces.
The talk is based on a joint work with Michael Brandenbursky.
