MATH 370, Fall 2013**

The "list of exercises" refers to the exercises at the end of the
class
notes

In some of the assignments you'll see instructions saying "Solve
questions a, b, c, ..., f" and then "submit questions x, y, ...,
z". The meaning of that is that by now I expect you to be able to
solve successfully all the questions a, b, c, ..., z. Especially
since you are asked NOT to submit them. For **those**
questions, you are welcome to come to my office hours to ask for
hints, discuss with your friends, look them up on the web etc.
However, in regard to the questions you have to submit: in this
case the solution must be **yours**. You are not allowed to
write common solutions, or copy a solution off some website of
text book. In case you are stuck, you are welcome to come to my
office hours and ask for hints.

**Assignment 1**

**Due date: September 23 by 14:00.** (You may give me your
assignment in class, or give it to the office on the 10th floor.)

**Solve** the following exercises from the list of exercises at
the end of the class notes : 1, 2, 8, 11

**Submit** questions: 3, 5, 7, 12 (**only)**

**Assignment 2**

**Due date:
September 30 by 14:00.**

Solve exercises 13, 14, 15, 17

Submit exercises 16, 18, 19, 20. (Hint for
question 19. Show first that every subgroup of order 8 of S_4
has at most two elements of order 4.)

**Assignment 3**

**Due date:
October 7 by 14:00.**

Solve exercises 24, 30, 31.

Submit exercises 25, 27, 28, 32.
