# Advanced Calculus MATH 314, Fall 2017

The tutorials start on Friday September 22, 1-35 pm. to 2-25 pm. in the Rutherford Physics Building, Room 118.

Assignment 4 opens on October 27 and closes on November 11. You have only 5 tries per question on this set.

The multiple choice midterm will be done on webwork. The problem set will open on Thursday November 16 at 6 pm. and close on Friday November 17 at 11: 55pm.
Please note that you have only one try per question on this set. No exceptions.

Also note that the drop down box is initially set to show a question mark. Hitting submit with the question mark showing will use up your one attempt. I cannot change this, it is built into the system. Be careful not to click on anything as you load the question.

Some of the answers given are numerical approximations. If you don't get one of the answers given to high precision, then please check your work.

Some of the calculations are involved. You will need to use (at least) a calculator.

### Course Outline

Prerequisite: MATH 133, MATH 222.

Restriction: Not open to students who have taken or are taking MATH 248.

Book: James Stewart, Multivariable Calculus, Eighth Edition, Cengage Learning. If you have any multivariable calculus text you do not need to buy the official textbook. Note that Calculus, a Complete Course, by Robert A. Adams and Christopher Essex, Pearson Addison-Wesley, is an excellent book and used in some engineering math courses.

Syllabus:

1. Derivative as a matrix.
2. Chain rule.
3. Implicit functions.
4. Constrained maxima and minima.
5. Jacobians.
6. Multiple integration.
7. Line and surface integrals.
8. Theorems of Green, Stokes and Gauss.
9. Fourier series with applications.

This corresponds to sections 14.4 thru 16.10 of the book inclusive. The book does not cover Fourier series. There is a nice set of notes at https://see.stanford.edu/materials/lsoftaee261/book-fall-07.pdf and if necessary additional sources or notes will be made available.

Assessment: 0.15a + 0.2t + 0.65f, where a, t and f  are percentage marks for the assignments, midterm tests and final examination respectively.

The final examination will be of 3 hours duration. It will contain a multiple choice component. There is no "additional work" option and the grade of incomplete will not be given. A supplemental exam will be available.

Assignments: There will about 6 assignments during the semester delivered on-line using the Webwork system.

Mid terms: There will be two midterms, one written, the other multiple choice.

Exam Viewing: The instructor reserves the right to set a specific time or times for  the purpose of exam viewing. If such times are set, they will be announced on the course webpage.
