 Elliptic functions and equations of modular curves

Abstract: Let p>3 be a prime. We provide explicit embeddings of the
modular curves X<sub>1</sub>(p) into projective spaces of 
dimension (p-3)/2 and
show that their image is an intersection of explicit degree two
hypersurfaces. I will keep the talk fairly elementary, with only basic
complex analysis required to understand the key ideas of the
construction.
