Required Text: William J. LeVeque,
Fundamentals of Number Theory,
Dover Books.
Note: Because of the unexpectedly high enrolment in the course, the
bookstore has run out of textbooks.
The book can be ordered from the web, (just click on the title above).
Syllabus: This course will cover the standard
syllabus for an
introductory undergraduate course in number theory.
The content and pace will be challenging:
emphasis will be placed on rigorous proofs, and on developping
mathematical
maturity and problem-solving skills.
Grading Scheme : 40% Bi-weekly
assignments ,
40%
term project,
20% class participation.
The class participation grade will be based primarily on two ingredients:
1. A 30-minute presentation that each student will give
in class of their project, during the extra
"tutorial hour"
that will start meeting on a regular basis around mid-February.
2. Your contributions and solutions (by email or in-class) to the
questions that I will be mentionning in
class and posting on this web page.
