Encrypting data files

For encrypting confidential data we recommend Truecrypt. It's easy to install and use, it does a very good job of encrypting your data and it's free. Versions exist for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

It works by creating what looks like an opaque encrypted folder. When you open it with your password it looks like any other folder on your desktop. So Truecrypt:

  1. Encrypts your files
  2. Hides all information about the files - name, type, size
  3. Hides itself. There is no way to know that this container is an encrypted folder.

If you want to install it yourself you can download it from here.

There is a good tutorial on using it here.

If you prefer we can install it for you and give you a quick walkthrough. It takes about 5 minutes to install and setup. Contact Greg or Donna for help.
