MATH-140, WINTER 2012
Instructor: Prof. W. Jonsson, BURN 922
TA's: Artour Tomberg, BURN 1031, office hours: 10:30-12:30 on Monday
Alexandra Tcheng, BURN 1029, office hours: 4:00-6:00 on Tuesday
Marking scheme: 15% assignments + 10% quizzes + 75% final exam
Assignments:
ASSIGNMENT 1 (solutions)
ASSIGNMENT 2 (solutions) NB: There seems to be a typo in the first question. The identity in 1a) should read \cos 3\theta = 4\cos^3 \theta - 3 \cos \theta, without the square.
ASSIGNMENT 3 (solutions) NB: For the third question, you don't have to solve for the zeros of f ''(x), and for critical points you can find their approximate location by expressing the equation f '(x) = 0 in terms of two simple functions and looking at their graphs on a separate picture. If you can find the derivative f '(0) using the limit definition (no L'Hopital!), I'll give you a bonus mark (you don't have to do it).
ASSIGNMENT 4 (solutions) NB: In the second question, the interval should be \pi/2 < x < 3\pi/2, and the initial approxiamtion should be x_0 = \pi + \pi/3.
ASSIGNMENT 5 (solutions) NB: The assignment is due in class on Wednesday March 8.
ASSIGNMENT 6 (solutions) NB: In question 1b, the formula should read

i.e. there is an extra 1/2 factor in the last term.
Quizzes:
You have to write the quiz in the tutorial section that you're registered in. Don't be late as the quiz will be held at the beginning of the tutorial. No calculators. You're responsible for everything covered in the lectures and tutorials up to the day of the quiz.
QUIZ 1 was held on the week of Feb. 6 - Feb.10:
Version 002 (solutions)
Version 003 (solutions)
Version 004 (solutions)
Version 005 (solutions)
QUIZ 2 was held on the week of Mar. 19 - Mar. 23:
Version 002 (solutions)
Version 003 (solutions)
Version 004 (solutions)
Version 005 (solutions)
Review session:
Before the exam, Alexandra and I will probably organize a review session where we will answer questions and do problems. All are welcome to attend. Tentative date: Friday April 13. More on this later.
THE REVIEW SESSION WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY APRIL 13 FROM 4 TO 8 PM IN BURNSIDE 1214. I (Artour) will also hold office hours on that day from 12 to 4 PM, since my usual office time on Monday will be cancelled because of Easter holidays. Happy Easter everyone!
Final Exam:
The Final Exam will be held on April 17 at 9 AM (location to be determined). You are strongly encouraged to try some of the old calculus exams that can be found on Prof. Drury's webpage.
The Final will be held in ENGTR (Trottier), rooms 0070 (last names Abr-Far) and 0100 (Fra-Zha). Don't forget your McGill ID card, as you will not be allowed to write the exam without it. GOOD LUCK!
